MIYO History
Marin Interfaith Youth Outreach
was formed in 1992 by Five interfaith congregations and operated a Teen Center at The Northgate Mall in Terra Linda. In September of 1993 the Teen Center was relocated to Central San Rafael where it has Operated programs for the past 13 years. These programs helped move “at-risk” youth toward positive life outcomes. In November of 2005 the MIYO leadership decided to close the Teen Center to focus our resources on delivering effective programs to youth all across Marin County, utilizing the Youth Development Model. Youth Development is a proven, holistic approach that focuses on supporting the overall development of young people – rather than on “fixing problem behaviors” – and on engaging entire communities in helping all youth thrive.
MIYO will continue to use volunteers from the faith communities, local businesses and service clubs, along with staff, to offer a cost-effective, comprehensive program for low-income, immigrant and minority teens in the Marin County community. The programs will provide underserved Youth with education and academic support, job preparation, job skills training, arts, leadership training, and other youth development activities that foster the development of self-esteem and building confidence in a safe, caring, supervised environment.
